Scale Rulers, Protractors & Drawing Compasses

Essential additions to any maths student’s pencil case, our range of rulers, protractors, and compasses will keep you on the right lines. However, these versatile instruments aren't confined to the classroom. Check out our collection, and you'll find tools, such as scale rulers, drawing compasses, and protractors, suitable for use in the field by architects, engineers, and even astronomers. Whether you're looking for an all-in-one kit or want to buy your geometric accessories separately, our collection is sure to have just what you're looking for.

The resilient ruler

While they might be outrageously analogue, you'll be hard-pressed to find a piece of technology that can replace a scale ruler. While your computer or laptop will have tools allowing you to draw straight lines on a screen, they're of no use in a classroom or out in the field. Many of our rulers are clear for added accuracy, allowing you to see important indicators and marks.

On top of that, you'll find those made from shatter-resistant materials so that, if they're accidentally dropped or bent, you don't have to worry about any compromise in performance. If you need to carry your ruler with you, either for site work or in a schoolbag, we can also offer a selection of folding rulers, helping save space and making them much more portable. In addition, our range includes scale rulers in varying lengths, so you can measure just what you want to, just when you need to.

Classic compasses

The drawing compass is another geometric instrument that refuses to be outshone by the computer age. It consists of two arms hinged together at the top, allowing the arms to be opened or closed according to the task at hand. One end of the arms is finished with a sharp point, while the other sports an adjustable holder. The sharp end is used to fix the compass at the centre of the circle to be drawn, while the holder houses a pen or pencil. The user can quickly and efficiently draw a perfect arc or circle by keeping the pointed end firmly in place.

However, while drawing compasses are crucial in the world of geometry, they also serve another purpose. Using the sharp end as a fulcrum, they can be used to mark out distances accurately. They have been used for decades by cartographers, navigators, and orienteering enthusiasts to chart or mark out locations and expanses with unerring precision.

Our selection of drawing compasses includes those made from die-cast metal. Die-casting is the process of driving molten metal into a mould under high pressure. The result is a drawing compass that not only has that enduring, classic appeal but is durable, easy to move, and waterproof.

Precise protractors

Angles and parallel lines are an essential part of any geometric activity, which is where our protractors and set squares come in handy. Like our rulers, many of these are made from clear, shatter-resistant plastic, ensuring that you can see any crucial markings through the instrument, and it won't let you down if there's some unintentional droppage.

Protractors are the perfect solution to verifying known angles and accurately calculating those that have yet to be established. Typically, protractors appear as a semi-circle, with angles marked from a baseline. With the angles clearly displayed from the baseline, protractors make drawing correct and accurate angles as easy as it gets.

While set squares are also used to mark out angles, they also have other uses. A triangular instrument with a right-angled edge at the bottom, its primary use, when combined with one of our rulers, is to draw parallel lines. However, use two together, and you can quickly measure the diameter of a round object. On top of that, this versatile piece of kit can be used to ensure that rulers used to take vertical measurements are sitting exactly at 90°. Furniture makers commonly use this technique to ensure that all joints are marked accurately before cutting.

You’ll find our selection of these geometric necessities available singly or in kits. For protection, many of these kits are housed in metal boxes. However, should you need them for exam conditions, you’ll also find them sold in clear, plastic sleeves.
